I love Bethenny Frankel, former Real Housewife of New York and creator of the successful Skinnygirl brand, which is why I figured it was high time I tried a few of her premixed cocktails.
At the heart of Bethenny’s empire — which includes books, a reality show, a talk show and a line of products ranging from shapewear to booze — are the Skinnygirl Margarita and Sangria Cocktails. The idea behind the Skinnygirl drinks is that they are pre-mixed alcoholic beverages that are meant to offer low-calorie versions of well-known cocktails.
I decided to try the margarita and sangria cocktails, which are available in most liquor stores (each bottle was just under $13 at Green’s Liquor Store in Atlanta). Now, I have to confess that I’m not usually a premixed drink kind of girl, so that may have influenced my opinion.
As much as admire Bethenny and the Skinnygirl brand, I have to say that I was not impressed with either of these drinks. They weren’t bad, but I felt like for $13 a pop, I could probably mix up my own versions, which would taste much better.
The margarita was refreshing, but I needed a little bit more sweetness than was present. The sangria was the opposite. When I make sangria, I usually use a dryer red or white wine, but the Skinnygirl tasted like its base was a sweeter wine. So if you like sweeter wines, perhaps you’d be a fan. I just felt like I could go down to Trader Joe’s, get a bottle of two-buck Chuck and some fruit and make a tastier drink.
For the record, I also had my boyfriend Mark, who is a fan of both margaritas and sangria, try each drink. His conclusion? The margarita was nothing special, but he liked the sangria enough to pour himself a glass.
It really pains me to say this — again, because I consider Bethenny a mentor and want to love everything that she does — but for me, these two Skinnygirl products are a “miss.” With that said, I’m not opposed to trying one of her flavored vodkas or her wines. Perhaps I just haven't found the right Skinnygirl “fit” quite yet.
Have you tried any of the Skinnygirl products? Are they “fits” or “misses” for you? Please share your thoughts on our Facebook page or in the Comment section of this blog. Until next week — stay FWABulous!
