The Perfect Reward for a Desert Hike: An Afternoon at the Four Seasons Scottsdale Spa

By 10 a.m. the temperature was well into the 90s — and of course, that was about the time that my boyfriend, Mark, and I began climbing up Scottsdale, AZ's, Pinnacle Peak. 

The trail is less than a mile away from the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, which is where we were staying for assignments for American Fitness Magazine and Urban Lux.

So, with plenty of water in my backpack, we set off to climb up the peak as far as we could before needing to head back to the resort for a lunch appointment. It was a pretty good uphill climb, which meant we were able to squeeze in a nice workout that morning. (The bonus is that we saw plenty of bunnies hopping along the trail — and thankfully, no snakes.)

But the best part of hiking in the morning was that I was scheduled for a Healing Hiker Massage at the spa that afternoon. (And BTW, if you are interested in hiking while visiting Scottsdale, the earlier you go, the better. I went running the next morning at 7 a.m. But by 8 a.m., I wouldn't have made it.)

The spa is home to a fitness studio that offers a variety of class options, as well as a fitness center stocked with everything from a TRX to BOSUs — which meant I was a happy girl. Other amenities included cold towels and complimentary bottled water and POWERADE.

After checking in, I headed to the locker room where I enjoyed a little time in the steam room (there was also a sauna). (Disclaimer, y'all, the spa did host my visit.) And then I donned my spa "uniform" (a robe and slippers) and headed to the relaxation room where I could enjoy a cup of tea and some yummy chia seed shortbreads (which were a neat little snack option).

Jennifer, my therapist for the 80-minute massage, picked me up on time, and once I was on the table the amazingness began. The treatment incorporated mountain arnica and sage lotion (I think it was lotion and not oil...) and was a combination of deep massage with stretching, which I am a huge fan of. (Sometimes it takes someone else holding you in a stretch for you to really reap the rewards.) A large chunk of the time was spent on my legs and lower back to help rejuvenate those muscles that were worn out from a morning of hiking — and an afternoon of day drinking at the pool.

Sure, there were moments where I had to breathe deeply to get through the "good" pain, but I'd rather a therapist apply that deep pressure — and get some results — than not. Before I knew it, my time was up, and Jennifer had my muscles feeling like butter.

I've had many a spa treatment at Four Seasons properties, but this was easily one of the best I've had at a FS. It was a "fit" that left me relaxed — and fit for a nap.
