Doing sun salutations while gazing out at the turquoise waters of the Atlantic and breathing in the South Florida salt air — for free. Yes, y’all, this is my idea of a fabulous vacation moment. And thanks to the geniuses at the W Fort Lauderdale, I got to do just this on a recent visit.
I’d been invited to visit the hotel for an article that will be in the April issue of Urban Lux Magazine. (So, yes, folks, I was “hosted” for this visit.) And I can’t tell you how excited the fitness fan in me was to learn that the hotel offers a variety of complimentary fitness classes for its guests.
There’s a class format for every type of exerciser, including Shred Beach Boot Camp, Beach Cardio Sculpt, Beach Bliss Yoga, and Zen Yoga. But what I really love is that the classes are either offered on the beach or on one of the terraces at the hotel overlooking the water that surrounds the W.
The only catch is that the classes are offered bright and early in the morning. So, with that said, my intentions to get to one of the boot camp classes were good — but not good enough. I never made it to one of those sweat sessions. (Although a few of my travel buddies did make it and gave their experience two free weights up.) But I did get my “ohm” on at yoga two mornings.
The instructors both mornings were very professional and taught at other studios in South Florida, in addition to the hotel. Although both classes were “fits,” I have to say that the class taught by Eugene was the best.
From rolling around on our backs “shaking” to a beat — which was a great exercise that made all of us giggle and our hip flexors burn — to the breathing exercises he took us through, my sweet friend, Jenny, and I left the class ready to take on a day of relaxation by the pool with big smiles on our faces.
