Happiness. Without it, you can forget about being a fit and well person. This is one of the messages that Tammy Stokes of West Coast Workout stressed at a retreat I attended last year at Blackberry Farm — and I was lucky enough to hear it again this past weekend at the Mandarin Oriental Atlanta (MOA).
As I mentioned in last week’s blog, I was invited to attend a spring detox retreat hosted by Tammy and the hotel. (Yes, y’all, my registration to attend was complimentary, but I did pay for some of the costs associated with my overnight visit.) So, last Saturday, I arrived at the MOA around 8 a.m. ready for a day of fitness and wellness.
I was looking forward to the day-long retreat, because a year ago, Tammy’s messages convinced me to make some changes in my life to become a happier individual. She inspired me then, and I knew she’d inspire me again.
The day was filled with workouts (ranging from a cardio body sculpting session to an hour of power flow yoga), discussions with Tammy about stress management and healthier eating strategies, a spa treatment (an amazing 50-minute customized holistic facial), and enjoying Tammy’s line of soups, infused waters, and juices (which were all really tasty, although I could have used a few more calories at times).
From around 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., me and about 5-8 other women (the group varied in size, as people came and went throughout the day) had an opportunity to chat with Tammy about wellness-related questions and concerns both as a group and one-on-one.
Although much of what she said regarding nutrition, positive thinking, hydration, fitness, and renewal was familiar, it was a good reminder as to what I need to be doing in my own life. I left the day feeling like I’d gotten an amazing workout (I’m still sore on Tuesday) and was mentally renewed. (And knowing that I was going to take a long bath in the deep soaking tub in my MOA room and enjoy room service breakfast the next morning didn’t hurt either!)
