Getting Obstacle Course Race Ready — A Few Tips from the Pros

Nervous anxiousness. That’s the feeling that best describes my reaction to obstacle course races (or as the cool kids call them “OCRs). 

So, what exactly are OCRs? Well, it’s a combination of running a few or several miles with the added bonus of obstacles like having to crawl under barbed wire or climb up a wall (think Tough Mudders, Spartan Races, etc.). Basically, they are like 5Ks on crack. 

I’ve gone back and forth on whether to try one of these — and I’m really beginning to think that 2016 will be the year that I force myself to shelve the nervous anxiousness and get over it. With that said, I recently wrote an article for Atlanta’s Simply Buckhead where I interviewed a few of Atlanta’s finest trainers and an OCR racing veteran to get their training tips.
