Big old pigs and me just hanging out in a picturesque turquoise bay in the Bahamas. Sounds like a pretty darn amazing way to kick off my 35th birthday month, right?
Yep, y'all, Oct. 7-10, I will be off to Grand Exuma Island in the Bahamas for a weekend of fun in the sun. (Disclaimer, folks, I am being hosted by the Bahamas for this trip, so it is complimentary.)
The focus of the weekend is to celebrate the Run for Pompey event. Now going into its second year, the race celebrates the memory of Pompey, the 32-year-old slave who led a rebellion and stopped the transfer order of some 77 people, which would have separated men, women, and children from their families. Last year, more than 200 participants from several countries took place in the inaugural event.
Race day is set for Oct. 8 and features a 2K “George Town Dash”, 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, and the only 50K ultra-marathon in The Bahamas. And yes, folks, I will be killing some calories running the 5K.
And then on Sunday, I’ll be rewarded with those adorable pigs. Yep, there is a family of pigs that live on the sandy beaches of the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay, and when the spirit moves them, they hop into the water for a dip.
So, if you’re not doing anything in a few weeks, why not make your way down to the Bahamas and join me for a little racing and swimming? Talk about a FWABulous fit for a long weekend!
